This is the Transport Action Hotline for 10 August 2010.

The Hotline has taken several weeks of summer break. We regret this gap, but look forward to resuming a regular Hotline schedule in the coming weeks.

1 - Greyhound shutdown threatened over labour dispute

Greyhound Canada has threatened a lockout of its drivers and maintenance workers as early as Thursday (10 August) unless a labour deal is reached. Amalgamated Transit Union local 1415, representing the 490 workers involved, has rejected Greyhound contract offers to date.

Most Ontario and Quebec intercity bus service would be shut down if the lockout should occur. Routes through Sudbury and western Canada, including the Toronto-Sudbury and Ottawa-Sudbury routes, are not said to be at risk at this time.

2 - Ottawa O-Train shutdown goes overtime

Ottawa's O-Trains have been sidelined since 12th July to allow for repair and maintenance work on the route. It was announced last week that trains will not resume until at least 29th August, due to "unforeseen complications" in the work, which was originally scheduled to be finished by 15th August. Meanwhile, a replacement bus service is operating with stops close to the O-Train stations, with similar frequency of service, but with slower trip times.

3 - WestJet puts aircraft purchases in holding pattern

Last week, WestJet Airlines announced it would delay the deliveries of some Boeing aircraft orders originally scheduled from next year until 2017. The airline was not convinced that the economic recovery was yet sufficiently strong enough to proceed with the previous schedule of plane deliveries. WestJet meanwhile reported a profit of $21 million in its second quarter this year.

4 - Canada Line exceeds ridership projections

Ridership on Vancouver's Canada Line now exceeds 100,000 riders each weekday, three years ahead of projections. The line opened 17 August 2009 at a cost of over $2 billion. Even with high ridership, there remains an expected annual shortfall of revenues over operating costs of up to $21 million until the mid-2020s.

5 - NL party leader wants Marine Atlantic private

The leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador First Party has called for ferry operator Marine Atlantic to be privatised. Wayne Bennett cites problems with the crown corporation such as the frequent schedule delays, a lack of communication with passengers over these delays, and a recent reservation system that has drawn the wrath of truckers.

Last week, Marine Atlantic ferries between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland were off schedule by as much as 11 hours, a situation Marine Atlantic blamed on ferry vessel problems.
